Fifty years
later, India is still going
around in circles. It’s safe to
assume that this dizzy state of
affairs has no connection with
the planet being round.
What worries
me is that the majority seems to
think that there is reason to
celebrate. What exactly are we
celebrating? Megalomania? Mass
corruption? Contractual
killings? Scam artists thriving
in a country that is already
deprived?
Perhaps there
are some of us that are
celebrating to forget. Forget
that solid spirit of commitment
that gave us independence.
Forget the rampant decay around
us, which is visible even to the
myopic.
Let’s take
the easy route and cauterize our
collective conscience.
Anesthetize those inner voices
that are begging to be heard.
